Before submission

A few things you should be familiar with before you submit.

Preparation of the manuscript

General formatting guidelines:

Use double line spacing.

Times New Roman 14 for title and subheadings and 12 manuscript’s text.

Include line and page numbering.

Do not use page breaks in your manuscript.

File formats:

The following word processor file formats are acceptable for the main manuscript document:

Microsoft Word (DOC, DOCX)

Rich text format (RTF)

Title page:

The title page should be placed in a separate file and should include:

1. A title as short as possible (of not more than 100 letters)

2. Details of all authors including name and address of the institutions

3. Name and address of the author to whom the proofs and correspondence should be sent (corresponding author). 

Abstract:

A short self-explanatory structured (The background, aim, methods, results, conclusion, and trial registration as appropriate ) abstract of 200 words should be submitted on a separate page followed by a brief listing of carefully selected MeSH keywords (5-8).

Figures formats:

  • Figures should be numbered in the order they are first mentioned in the text, 
  • Figures should be uploaded in the correct orientation.
  • Figure titles (max 15 words) and legends (max 300 words) should be provided in the main manuscript, not in the graphic file.
  • Figure keys should be incorporated into the graphic, not into the legend of the figure.
  • Each figure should be closely cropped to minimize the amount of white space surrounding the illustration. 
  • Figures should be uploaded in the correct orientation.
  • Figure titles (max 15 words) and legends (max 300 words) should be provided in the main manuscript, not in the graphic file.
  • Figure keys should be incorporated into the graphic, not into the legend of the figure.
  • Each figure should be closely cropped to minimize the amount of white space surrounding the illustration.
  • Individual figure files should not exceed 10 MB. If a suitable format is chosen, this file size is adequate for extremely high-quality figures.
  • It is the responsibility of the author(s) to obtain permission from the copyright holder to reproduce figures (or tables) that have previously been published elsewhere.
  • Acceptable format:

v PDF (suitable for diagrams and/or images)

v Microsoft Word (suitable for diagrams and/or images, figures must be a single page)

v PowerPoint (suitable for diagrams and/or images, figures must be a single page)

v TIFF /PNG for images 

Tables formats:

When preparing tables, please follow the formatting instructions below.

  • Tables should be numbered and cited in the text in sequence using Arabic numerals (i.e. Table 1, Table 2, etc.).
  • Tables less than one A4 or Letter page in length can be placed in the appropriate location within the manuscript.
  • Tables larger than one A4 or Letter page in length can be placed at the end of the document text file. Please cite and indicate where the table should appear at the relevant location in the text file so that the table can be added in the correct place during production.
  • Larger datasets or tables too wide for A4 or Letter landscape pages can be uploaded as additional files.
  • Tabular data provided as additional files can be uploaded as an Excel spreadsheet (.xls) or comma-separated values (.csv). Please use the standard file extensions.
  • Table titles (max 20 words) should be included above the table, and legends (max 350 words) should be included underneath the table.
  • Tables should not be embedded as figures or spreadsheet files but should be formatted using the ‘Table object’ function in your word processing program.
  • Commas should not be used to indicate numerical values.
  • Color and shading may not be used. Parts of the table can be highlighted using superscript, numbering, lettering, symbols or bold text, the meaning of which should be explained in a table legend.

References:

APA reference style is accepted.

Peer Reviewing:

  • All papers will be blindly peer-reviewed, and based on the reviewer's comments, the Editorial Board reserves the right to accept or reject any paper.
  • Papers are accepted on the understanding that they are subject to statistical and editorial revision as deemed necessary, including abridgment of the text and omission of tables or graphs.
  • All accepted manuscripts are subject to editorial modification and revisions necessary to conform with the journal style. 

Article Processing Change (APC): 

The Journal of Medical Research Institute (JMRI) publishes articles under the model of Open Access. Once published, the articles are immediately available for free without restrictions. The journal charges the accepted article an article processing charge (APC) to cover the costs of peer review, editing, typesetting, archiving, journal management, etc. incurred in the process of processing articles, to maintain a sustainable open-access academic publishing and exchange platform in the long run. 

The journal does not charge APC from authors of articles that will be submitted before December 31, 2024. From January 1, 2025, the journal charges an APC fee of 1,500 Egyptian Pounds per article (excluding tax). 

Waivers and Discounts 

We encourage authors to publish in JMRI and do not want APC to be a barrier to scientific publication, especially the authors from low-income countries. The JMRI offers a range of discounts or waivers for authors from low-income countries. 

The corresponding authors from the Medical Research Institute, Alexandria University, whose article(s) are eventually accepted for publication will receive a 50% discount on the APC. 

Open Acess 

The Journal of Medical Research Institute (JMRI) provides immediate open access to all published content without charge to users or their Institutes. Users may read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without obtaining prior permission from the publisher or the author. 

Author Copy Rights 

The Journal of Medical Research Institute (JMRI) allows the author(s) to hold the copyright, and to retain publishing rights without any restrictions. The authors agree to make their original work completely available and free to use, copy, and redistribute in all formats without permission as long as the authors and the source are properly cited.
